Specialised travel set to grow

The internet has opened up endless possibilities to find specialised holidays. Online bookings for special interest holidays are booming, and stealing market share from traditional package holidays, according to a report by Travelzest, in association with the Centre for Future Studies.

Top 10 "niche" travel markets tipped to grow over the next 5 years:
• Learn-a-skill-in the-sun (cooking, surfing, painting, salsa dancing)
• Inner self escapes (yoga, meditation, spa)
• Hobbies abroad (art, gardens, cycling)
• Festivals & Fiestas (dance, opera, food & wine)
• Eco-lifestyle
• Wildlife & nature tours
• Sports tourism (following teams and playing sport)
• The home-from-home hotel • Soft and extreme adventure
• Nip/ Tuck tourism

Online Package Market is Growing in the UK

The package industry is experiencing a strong shift towards online bookings, and the packages percentage of the total travel market is increasing as illustrated by the graph below. Packages today represent 26% of total online travel. Online sales grew by a constant 57% in the years 2002-2006, and CAGR are expected to grow 43% in 2007 and reach EUR 2 billion.
